Chapter One: The Meeting
Barrel
It was as a normal day in Halloweentown. Lock and Shock were chasing me around the treehouse with various rusty weapons. I was hiding behind our old half-couch, but knew I'd be found soon. It was only a matter of time... I peered over the top of the couch, then ducked as a spear flew past where my head had been mere seconds before, to land quivering in the wall. Why did Lock and Shock want to re-kill me? It began less than an hour before...
I had awoken to the smell of smoke. Shock was cooking. I groaned and climbed off of the small wooden bench that served as my bed, and stumbled out of my room. I met a sleepy-looking Lock, who grunted a greeting. Lock was definitely NOT a morning person. The two of us entered the small kitchen of the treehouse and sat on the floor. I blinked as a bowl filled with an unidentifiable substance was shoved under my nose. I sniffed it suspiciously. Snake and Spider stew. Without thinking, I asked the question that would get Shock mad at me: "Did you poison this?" As the furious Shock pursued me, I snatched Lock's plunger to use as a weapon. My second mistake of the day. Now Lock AND Shock were chasing me.
Now, back to the present. I stood up and stepped out from behind the couch. Before I could be skewered by another spear, I quickly reminded my cohorts what day it was. "Hey guys! It's Halloween!"
Shock lowered the spear that she had pressed against my chest. "I forgot about that," she admitted.
Lock jumped up onto the couch, holding his plunger high in the air. He tumbled backwards as Shock punched him in the stomach. "Let's go to the Human World early! Jack'll never find out!" my witch-like cohort hissed, eyes glittering with mischief.
"YEAH!" Lock and I chorused, forgetting about the fight we were in the middle of mere moments before. The three of us grabbed our masks from their place by Oogie's shrine and set off towards the graveyard.
Looking around to make sure Jack was nowhere nearby, the three of us crept into a mausoleum and used it as a portal to the Human World. We walked in total darkness for what seemed to be an hour, but was in reality only a few minutes. The air grew damp and smelled of mold, and we knew we had arrived. It took all three of us to push the mausoleum door open, and we tumbled out, landing in a heap.
It had already grown dark in the Human World, for their sun sets sooner than the one in Halloweentown. There was a brilliant light in the sky. Lock peered up at it. "Hey guys, is that a star?" he wondered, pointing to the light.
Shock and I also looked up. The light was bright- it was a blue so bright it was almost white, but at the same time, was bluer than I've ever seen. It was hard to describe. The light sped towards us, faster and faster. Shock grabbed Lock and me by the collars of our shirts. "That, boys, is most definitely NOT a star!" the little witch hissed, dragging us backwards. "And something weird is about to happen, I can sense it!"
I opened my mouth to reply to her last statement, but was silenced. Three humans were walking through the graveyard, towards us- and towards the light, which now slammed into the ground. I ignored the humans for now and turned my attention to the light. It appeared to be a spaceship of some sort. The ship had short wings, and what appeared to be a large gun in the shape of a raised scorpion tail slung over the top. A door that I had not noticed before opened, and a strange creature walked out.
The creature was unlike anything I'd seen- and I've seen some odd creatures. It looked like a centaur with short bluish fur. Each hand had seven fingers, and appeared weak. The face was different, also. The creature had deep green, almond-shaped eyes set above three vertical slits in the middle of the face. The ears were pointed, and two horn-like objects jutted out from the top of the creature's head, topped with eyeballs. And the creature, whatever it was, had no mouth. After staring for a moment, I turned my attention to the tail. The creature had a long tail resembling a scorpion's, with a long scythe-like blade on the end. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I jumped, startled. One of the humans, a male, had placed his hand on my shoulder. The creature chose that moment to speak. <Good evening, humans, what I have to tell you is very important, so listen carefully,> it said. It, which must have been male judging from the voice, spoke without using a mouth! I heard it- not with my ears, but with my mind! The creature continued speaking.
<Your planet is being invaded by another species,> the centaur-scorpion told us. <They are called the Yeerks. Yeerks are a slug-like species who crawl in through your ear and wrap themselves around your mind, controlling your every move. The Yeerk has access to your memories, and can hear your every thoughts. But every three days, the Yeerks must go to a Yeerk pool to soak up Kadrona rays, or they will shrivel up and die.> The creature's eyestalks swiveled around, obviously searching the sky for something.
Shock spoke up. "Who- and WHAT- are you?" she asked, not sounding nervous at all. "How can you talk without a mouth? Why are you telling us this?" Her voice grew shrill, and I knew that she was scared, but trying not to let anyone else know.
<My name is Alikorfit-Bevett-Pyskrow, and I am an Andalite warrior,> Alikorfit replied. <I speak using thought-speech. And I am telling you this because one of the major Yeerk leaders, Visser Three, is coming to supervise the invasion of Earth.>
One of the humans, a female, asked, "What are we supposed to do? The police will just laugh if we try to tell them, and they'll just think we're high off of some drug."
Alikorfit remained silent for a moment, then announced, <You, little human with the green hair, go into my ship. Bring me the blue cube.>
Lock gave me a small nudge forwards. "Y-you heard him! Go!" my devilish cohort ordered, his hands shaking as he pushed me again.
I must admit, I was more than a little nervous as I slowly stepped forwards and into the ship. Blinking in the sudden light, I looked around. The interior was simple- a control panel, a computer, a joystick-like object, and the blue box I was supposed to fetch. I picked up the box, examining it as I carried it back out. It had strange writing snaking across the surface. As soon as I stepped off of the ship, Alikorfit took the box from my hands. <Everyone gather around me,> he ordered. <And press your hand against one side of the box.> Since I was closest, I was the first to obey. I laid my hand on the top of the box, looking back at my cohorts expectantly. Lock was next, his hand on one of the sides. Shock let out a small growl, but joined us, her hand on the side opposite Lock's. The three humans were next. The only female of their group pressed her hand against the very bottom face of the cube, with her male friends touching the remaining two sides. Alikorfit's hand rested atop mine, also touching the box. The blue box grew warm, and a tingling feeling raced throughout my arm. The tingling stopped, and Alikorfit told us, <Now let go of the box. You six now have the power to morph.>
Lock had a confused look on his face. "Morph?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "What's that?" Lock hated admitting that he didn't know something, and his tail was now swishing angrily.
<You can become any animal you touch- but only for two hours. Any longer, and you are trapped forever. All you need to do is touch an animal and concentrate on it, acquiring its DNA. Then you may morph into that animal,> Alikorfit replied, answering Lock's question. <To return to your natural form, you must concentrate on your own body and you will morph back.>
Curious as to how this worked, I scooted close to the Andalite and touched his leg with one finger, after making sure that Lock, Shock, and the humans weren't watching me. I thought about how cool it would be to have a bladed tail- then I would win every fight with Lock and Shock I somehow found myself in the middle of! I glanced up at Alikorfit, who seemed to be in a daze. Confused, I backed away. The Andalite snapped out of his stupor. <You six must leave now- Visser Three is coming!> he whispered. <Go!> His stalk eyes turned to glance up at the sky.
After hiding behind a tombstone, I looked up at the sky, following Alikorfit's gaze. There was a section of the night sky that was pitch-black, and no stars showed. It was the darkest black I've ever seen. It hovered above us, then landed. I could see the ship clearly now, it was shaped like a giant black battle-axe. A door slid open, and multiple reptilian-looking creatures stepped out behind an Andalite who seemed to ooze pure evil- like Shock, except more evil, if that's possible. They were easily seven feet tall, with multiple blades running down their bodies. The creatures feet looked like giant, clawed bird feet. Their scaly skin was brownish-green in color, and they had long necks, with a beaked face sitting atop the neck. Finally, the Andalite spoke. <So we meet again, Alikorfit,> the Andalite hissed.
<Visser Three,> the Andalite began, <You know how I feel about you infesting an Andalite.> He lifted his tail to shoulder height. <But I must destroy you before you can kill any humans.>
<Ah, Alikorfit-Bevett-Pyskrow, always the noble Andalite!> Visser Three, the only Andalite Controller in existence, sneered. <Too bad that your death will be quick and painful!> With a barking thought-laugh, he lunged at Alikorfit as more Hork Bajir marched out of the ship to join their boss. I shuddered as I heard the mental cries of the Andalite, and saw blue-black blood spraying everywhere. Even though I had worked for Oogie Boogie, I didn't really enjoy seeing death. If one of my cohorts was going to never re-die, it would be Shock. She laughs in the face of Death, which irritates him. And now we had to escape Visser Three and his Hork Bajir. One would assume that, after working for Oogie, nothing could scare me anymore. Anyone who assumed that would be dead wrong. I was TERRIFIED. And ten- Ten!? I counted again. Yep, ten. Ten Hork Bajir were coming towards the humans, my cohorts, and me. And they were armed with some sort of gun. I turned and began running.
