Alrighty.
Disclaimer: I own none of these characters except for Zora. Ethan owns himself, the students/teacher owns themselves, and the God of the Supernatural owns all the other characters that may or may not appear, including Lock. I own none of the wonderful songs that appears in the school musical. Unfortunately.
A/N: I'm alive and kicking (kicking my Shock plushie, to be exact). I'm not dying AT LEAST until Halloween. How else could I meet Barrel? Most names have been changed to protect the semi-innocent. Lyrics are in italics.
Dedication: This fic is dedicated to a wonderful violist named Ethan. This fic is based off him and his rather... Lock-ish appearance and voice. He's not a sugar-crazed demonic plunger-wielding kid, though. He's nice.
---------
As soon as he set foot in this world, he hated it. He had Shock use her magic to make his tail disappear before he came, and he cut off his devilish bangs. Just so he'd fit in. He also dyed his hair light brown, not wishing to attract attention. His eyes had blue contacts in them, for how many humans have yellow eyes? He could answer that. None. And to make things worse, he had to go to SCHOOL. Disguised as a human. A sophomore human. He hated his disguise; he'd rather be "vertically challenged" than normal human height. How were the humans supposed to fear him if they didn't know who he really was? He, Lock, disguised as a human teenager. He didn't even know how to carry a tune, yet he was enrolled in the school's orchestra. He chose the instrument that sounded easiest to play: the viola. Then school started...
His human name was Ethan. He personally hated that name, but it was the one Shock gave him. Whatever Shock tell you to do, you'd better do it. She had been recently stealing spellbooks. The other day, she had turned his plunger into a paper airplane... Oh, she paid for that. And not in souls, either. He grinned as he entered the band room. Oh yes, she paid in blood. And... there's some of the other students. He, Ethan aka "Lock", forced a smile as he passed the other violists. There was the only other male violist, Sean, who was a wrestler. His stand partner, Megan, waved to him. He slowly waved back, then stared at the first stand violas. Their names were Emma and Sara. Sara, oddly enough, played the violin for one of their songs... he was confused. The violin and the viola used different clefs, so... how did Sara do it? He was completely baffled, but decided not to ask how she managed it. He turned to his right after pulling his viola out of his case. He never told any human, but he, Shock, and Barrel made the viola themselves. The horsehair was, in fact, hair from the Headless Horse. The wood for the viola was made from a few branches of the Hanging Tree. The case was created by the town's "Evil" scientist, Doctor Finklestein. And-
Lock's thoughts were interrupted when the teacher, Mrs.- uh... damn. It's been half the school year already and he STILL didn't know her name! He shook his head in annoyance, then turned to the violins next to Sean. "Oy, what did the teacher say?" he asked.
The guy of the pair, Dereck, laughed. "Ethan, Mrs. Oignik said that the school musical is tonight," he informed Lock.
The female of the duo, named Zora, dropped her violin. "Damn it, sorry! I'm clumsy, I know it!" she cried as she dove off her chair and scrambled to pick up her precious instrument.
Lock rolled his eyes. This happened EVERY DAY. Next, she would- "Now I need to tune it again..." Zora sighed, fiddling with the tuning pegs at the top of the instrument while plucking each note. Loudly. Lock gave her an annoyed glare as the teacher droned on about some "Vivaldi" guy. The rest of class went by as it usually did: they played their incredibly fast song. The one that he had somehow gotten the viola solo in. Ah, well. At least he had the musical to look forward to... Lock had always loved musicals, ever since he arrived at Halloweentown. He never admitted it, because it wasn't "manly" enough, but he loved musicals. And he was one of the two violas chosen to play in the pit orchestra... Lock smiled to himself. He couldn't wait. Class ended quickly as he daydreamed about the musical, going into "auto-pilot" mode.
That night, he arrived at the school yet again. Thanks to Shock and her stolen spellbooks, he had a potion thta had caused everybody to believe that they knew him. Came in handy, especially since the family he lived with had a daughter, a harpist named Carissa who was a year younger than his disguise. She also happened to be playing in the musical. She wasn't even half as annoying as Shock and Barrel were, but he HAD lived with them for most of his life. Wait, the musical's about to start. Lock scanned the audience, appearing to search for something- or someone. He shrugged, then grinned as he raised his viola and placed it under his chin, joining the pit orchestra in the first few notes of the opening number, "Comedy Tonight."
The one who played Pseudolus, Jim, began singing. "Something familiar, something peculiar." Lock could feel it, something was unusual this performance. "Something for everyone, a comedy tonight!" Jim was right. The musical was great; it was amusing. "Something appealing, something appalling." Lock nearly messed up the next notes on his viola. The music was appealing, the thought of Shock coming was appalling. And he could've sworn he saw her in the audience... "Something for everyone, a comedy tonight!" Lock rolled his eyes. Five points to whoever can guess the name of the song. Jim continued his singing, "Nothing with kings, nothing with crowns!" Lock smirked. No kings meant that Jack wasn't in it, so that meant that the skeletal Pumpkin king hadn't found out where he was hiding. "Old complications, new situtations. Nothing portentous or polite- tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!"
Lock disagreed with the "tragedy tomorrow" part. "I'm stuck on this stupid human world until Shock stops being mad at me..." he growled, pressing so hard on the bow that a few bowhairs snapped. "Aw, damnit! Tonight's just not my night!"
Jim continued his song. "Something convulsive, something repulsive." Lock glared at his music, wishing he could burn a hole in it. A huge... black... smoking... hole. He was concentrating so hard that he missed Jim's next few lines, zoning back in when Jim admitted, "Nothing with gods, nothing with fate; weighty affairs will just have to wait! Nothing that's formal, nothing that's normal."
"Good, 'cause he's not gonna be normal anytime soon," Lock muttered, shifting his glare to Jim. The song finally ended, and the first act began. Pseudolus wished to be free, the young Hero fell in love with a girl that had been sold to a captain. Pseudolus's co-slave, Hysterium, freaked out a lot. The act finally came to an end, with Pseudolus being strangled by a Protean guard. Lock stood up and stretched, then walked up the aisle with his "sister", chancing a glance to his left. He inwardly groaned. It was indeed Shock, who was staring at him with an odd expression on her face. He quickly turned away and found himself staring at Zora, who was furiously scribbling on a piece of paper. "What're you doing?" he asked curiously.
Without looking up, Zora replied, "I'm writing a report for second period. Why'd you ask?"
Lock rolled his eyes. Of course... it HAD to be a report... He shrugged and told the violinist, "Thank you."
Zora, confused, asked, "Thanks? For what?"
Lock smiled and said, "Zoraaaaaaaa. You caaaaame," before he resumed walking up the aisle. You know... maybe it ISN'T a tragedy tonight, he thought as he got a quick drink of water. Maybe things will become better... He walked back down the aisle, passing Zora, who was bright red and hiding behind her program while flipping the piece of paper with her report over. He shook his head and laughed, then sat down in his seat and picked up his viola, whistling to himself.
